Welcome! Catholic Charities offers free English as a Second Language (ESL) classes for adults in Orleans and Jefferson Parishes. Each year, we help hundreds of learners from over 40 countries improve their English skills to succeed in their daily lives.
Whether you’re new to the U.S. or have lived here for years, our classes are designed for you.
About Our ESL Program
Our ESL program is designed to help adults who speak languages other than English improve their communication skills in everyday life. Whether you need English for work, school, medical appointments, or community activities, our classes focus on practical language skills like speaking confidently, understanding conversations and written materials, expanding vocabulary, and improving grammar. We offer group classes and one-on-one tutoring to support your learning. The program lasts 11 weeks, with new sessions starting regularly, including our upcoming FALL SESSION beginning October 6, 2025. To fit different needs, we provide both in-person classes and online classes, available in the morning and evening, so you can choose what works best for your schedule.

- Adults 18 years and older
- People from all backgrounds and languages
- Anyone eager to improve their English — beginners and advanced learners welcome!
Class Schedule
Our classes meet twice a week, based on your skill level from the placement test:
- Monday & Wednesday OR Tuesday & Thursday
- Morning and evening options, both in-person and online
How to Join?
- Registration Period: September 15th – October 7th
- Book Your Free Orientation Session and Test: Once registration opens, you can schedule your orientation and placement test HERE.
- Attend Orientation: This session is mandatory and will guide you through the enrollment process and help you get started.

Become a Volunteer and Make a Difference!
Volunteering with our ESL program is a powerful way to change lives, including your own.
By giving just a few hours a week, you can help adult learners from diverse backgrounds gain confidence in their English skills and open doors to new opportunities. Whether you choose to teach or tutor, your kindness and patience will create a welcoming space where students feel supported and motivated to succeed.
Our volunteers are the heart of our program. They build connections, celebrate milestones, and witness amazing progress firsthand. Plus, volunteering is a great way to gain valuable teaching experience, practice leadership skills, and connect with a caring community.
Here’s what volunteering with us looks like:
- Time commitment: 4 hours per week for one semester (11 weeks)
- Schedule: Available 2 days per week, with flexible options for in-person or virtual classes
- Requirements: Must be at least 18 years old, have strong English skills, and be willing to complete a background check
- Support: We provide comprehensive training and all the materials you need to succeed
