On Thursday, May 7, just in time for Mother’s Day, six local mothers and grandmothers will celebrate a successful conclusion of a series of workshops on positive parenting offered by Isaiah 43, the parenting and mentoring initiative of Catholic Charities Archdiocese of New Orleans. While the sessions are officially considered “workshops” participants and leaders say the fellowship and support are just as important as the information and skills they learn.

“The moms in the group form an informal support network,” says program director Kristina Gibson. “So as much as they appreciate the information they get from us, their sharing their own experiences and what works and doesn’t work for them is vital to a successful series. It shows them they are not alone and that others face the same challenges as parents.”

Fellowship workshops are offered for parents of children ages 4-13 and provide a non-threatening environment for parents to share and learn from each other. Workshops are rooted in faith and prayer, and incorporate Judeo-Christian scriptural teachings as they address critical parenting issues. Themes discussed in the workshops include Purpose of parenting, Active communication, Styles of parenting, Building cooperation, Effective non-violent discipline, Power of encouragement and Cultivating a spirit of forgiveness.

“With so many issues facing parents and young people today, our goal is to give them the tools to be good communicators and peacemakers first in their homes and then in their communities,” says Gibson. “We are working with them, respecting their roles as parents, to put the words of Archbishop Aymond’s family prayer into action by helping parents to, ‘form their children in faith’ and be a ‘voice for life and human dignity in our community’.”
