Hurricane Recovery
Operation Helping Hands
Operation Helping Hands, a program of Catholic Charities since 2005, brings together volunteers to paint and rebuild homes devastated by Hurricane Katrina for elderly and disabled storm victims. The program has begun ramping down services and is no longer accepting new volunteer groups or clients. The focus of Operation Helping Hands is currently to rebuild homes containing defective drywall previously rebuilt by volunteers.

The Scope of Our Work
Operation Helping Hands is privileged to have welcomed 29,730 volunteers to New Orleans from 2005-2012. The volunteers came from across the U.S. and sometimes from across the globe to give 850,184 hours of time to rebuild Katrina-damaged homes of elderly and disabled New Orleanians. In sum, the volunteers gutted 1,983 homes, rebuilt 211 homes and painted 413 homes.
